Mikogo: Reuniones Online / Online meetings

Some days ago we received an email (we receive quite a few) suggesting we reviewed this application for remote support. We’ve don´t really like it as a remote support tool, but it is a good option for online meetings. It is available for Windows and Mac (Linux is in beta testing which we have signed for). It’s free, of course.
If you want to start a session in Mikogo (for whatever the reason) you have to register (fast and just needs an email). Once registered you can donwload the program which will install itself. The default settings sets it up as an app. to start at windows startup but this is easily changed on the settings.
By right clicking on the icon you get the main options (settings, start session, schedule session). Once you’ve started a session anyone can join if you send them the session number (which can be preset if you wish on the settings). They just have to go to the web page and click on connect or, if they have the program installed, join a session with the menu option. This is very easy, specially for clients with no computer knowledge. However the fact that they have to install a program could be a drawback (of no real importance if you tell them before hand).
Once you’ve joined a session, right clicking on the icon gives us yet more options such as see the other participants, change the presenter, record the session. There are 2 I ‘d like to mention:
  • Whiteboard: This allows us to draw, underline and make notations on our screen for all participants to see. Very handy for meetings and classes.
  • Remote control: This option, in my opinion, is not correctly set. The technician registers and the client joins the session. But then the only option is for the technician to show his screen. To see the client’s machine you have to switch presenter and then you can request the remote control. Not very handy.
As I say, it’s not really the best option for remote control (works though) but it seems very interesting for online meetings and remote classes.

  1. Hi Smythsys,

Thanks a lot for the write up! Yes we are about to start a Linux beta stage – so thanks for signing up for that. We’ll contact you soon when we’re ready to start that.
About the remote support function of Mikogo, you wrote: “To see the client’s machine you have to switch presenter and then you can request the remote control”
Perhaps you haven’t seen this in Mikogo, but you can actually avoid this by changing the “Initial Viewing Direction” under “Settings”. Here is a screenshot: http://www.mikogo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/mikogo-start-options.jpg
Also there is a blog post about this here:

    Hope that helps!

    • Great. We will check it again! However it still lacks all the redial, reboot in service mode etc other tools have. I take it as an added functionality to its fantastic online features.
      Thanks.
